How to switch gears on Schwinn Collegiate 3 speed

I just acquired (free) a vintage Schwinn Collegiate 3 speed ladies bike (Serial #FQ592739.) It's in excellent shape (garaged) but I can't figure out how to switch gears properly, or else the gears might be messed up. Do you switch while you are pedaling or coasting?

I would also like to know what this bike might be worth.

I also acquired a vintage Schwinn World 10 speed (ladies) and have the same questions about gear switching and value. I'd appreciate any help you can give.

  1. To shift gears on the 3 speed you MUST stop pedalling, then shift, then begin pedalling again. "1" is the easiest to pedal gear, "3" is the hardest. Note that the rear hub MIGHT need some lube to work properly if it has been sitting around.

On your 10 speed you MUST BE pedalling as you shift. The left lever controls your front derailleur- for a big change in gear range. Pull the lever towards you and it will get harder to pedal. The right lever is for "fine tuning" the pedalling difficulty... pull the lever towards you slowly and it will become easier to pedal. This is called "non indexed" shifting. Move the lever(s) carefully until you achieve the correct gear and adjust slightly until it stops making clattering noises.

UNfortunately, neither of the bikes have much value despite being old Schwinns. Both the Colliegate and the World 10 were lower end models and they remain extremely common. What makes matters worse is that they are ladies bikes. As a general rule, ladies bikes tend to be used for parts to repair mens models. The mens versions are readily available in great condition for well under $50 at yard sales and flea markets while the womens versions fetch $20 or less.

  2. You switch gears when you are pedaling, not coasting or the chain might come off.
