Im thinking of setting up my own internet based company selling discounted cosmetics. I know where to get my stock from, setting up a website is not a problem, but need to know how i would go about setting up the website to take paypal payments, and also credit/debit card payments. Does anyone know where i would go for this service and how much it costs etc? And how would i get on the first page of google?!! any help on home run businesses would be much appreciated. thanks in advance...

  1. When we opened our on-line shop we used Roman Cart to set up the products.  It's very simple to use, you can upload up to 50 products at a time and it doesn't cost a fortune.  We linked it to a verified business account with Paypal.  You just design your website pages with your products on them and Roman Cart gives you the html code to put into the pages for your Buy Now buttons that take your visitors to purchasing their goods.

We still use Roman Cart but are considering moving away from Paypal as they have a single transaction limit of £650, which is too low for some of out customers.  Netbanx doesn't have this limit and takes all the credit and debit cards that you can accept with Paypal.  It's also compatible with Roman Cart.

Roman Cart costs £99.99 plus VAT for a year for up to 500 products.  (I think its' about £150 for up to 2000.)  Paypal charge 5% per transaction but until you sell anything, there are no charges.  Netbanx charges a smaller percentage, depending on the level of transactions but they have a monthly minimum charge of £20, which is less than the banks charge.

The short answer to getting on the first page of Google is to optimise your site so that it contains the key words that people search for.  The tighter you can write them, the higher you'll appear.  'Discounted cosmetics' will bring you higher up the page than 'cosmetics' but 'discounted hypoallergenic cosmetics' would move you further up for anyone looking for that type of cosmetics.

Think about your target markets and what they're searching for and write your site to suit them.  Google has a lot of free services to help you optimise your site.  Check out Google Analytics.  Listing your products on Googlebase also helps.

    Good luck with your business!
