we just got a caiman [miniture crocidile]; & we were wonderin how often we should feed him and what kind of temp to keep him in? he is only about a year old and is a little over a foot long, i've heard he can get up to 6ft long, is that true? he's very calm and already tamed. how big do you think he will get? i also heard that the more you feed them; the bigger they get, but im not sure if thats true.

well we've never had one of these b4 so any information you have will help us out; thanks!! =]

  1. You should have done your research BEFORE you got the caiman. And what kind of caiman? Dwarf caimans only grow 3.5 to 5 feet long. There are others which get much bigger. You need to know what kind you have. There are dwarf, smooth front, spectacled, Yacare, and black caimans. And caimans are crocodilians, but they are not crocodiles. There is a difference. They are not "miniature crocodiles". Black caimans can get 16 feet. Nothing miniature about that.

Here's a great website with tons of info on keeping caimans:

    http://crocodilian.com/crocfaq/

By the way, there is no such thing as a "tamed" caiman. I have owned them and can promise you that just because it acts calm doesn't make it tame. As it gets bigger, it will become more aggressive.

  2. Ok what u've done is stupid in the extreme. u have a pet thats gonna get big tends to be violent and can quite easily kill u when full grown AND YOUR KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT. first of all caiman are not crocodiles they belong to the same order but are not the same. second u need to know what species u have. all caiman species have slightly different needs.

read everything u can on this website http://crocodilian.com/ and buy some books on the keeping of these animals

oh and by the way when u grow bored and tired of caring for this animals (idiots like you always do) no zoo will take it no pet shop will take it and most rescues wont take it and they live for a long time.

  3. i had a friend that had one and he fed it dog food, fish ,steak, chicken all raw ofcorse. i think they get more like 4 feet

  4. aligator you mean?...never heard of a caiman croc

  5. you have a pet crockidle?anywas i googled this image of a caiman crocidile.http://www.wildernessclassroom.com/www/s...

its looks kinda big if you ask me.also look at this one

looks big to me.how are you going to keep this in a cage?i hope they stay tamed and are like dogs that stay loyal.you probally know more than so good luck with the crockidle!

  6. yes he will get about 6 feet no matter how much you feed him but horse meat, beef and dog food should be their diet. but you should feed him twice a day as much as he would eat. 4-7 feet is the average but most likely he will get 6 feet. but right now he should be on a all rodent diet mice, then rats then rabbits then what i mentioned. also no such thing as a caiman crocodile it's either a caiman or crocodile. but either way temp should be about 75-85 degrees on land and water shouldn't be heated just leave it.
