  1. 1 Pick an adequate cage in which the bird can move around and fully spread his wings. Stock it with plenty of perches, a water dish and a food dish, and line the bottom with newspaper.

Step2 Keep the cage in a room that does not get too hot or too cold, out of direct sunlight and away from any heating or cooling vents.

Step3 Get your bird smaller seeds and bird food mixtures if he’s parakeet or canary size, larger chunks of fruit and food if he’s a bigger variety. Provide fresh food and fresh water daily.

Step4 Birds generally love to interact and play. Get some hanging toys, beak blocks and other colorful items to amuse the bird. A large variety of bird toys are available at your pet store; pick ones that fit the size and strength of your feathered friend.

Step5 Birds also generally p**p a lot. Replace the cage liner and scrub down perches and bars at least once a week, more if the cage is looking icky. Change the food and water more than once a day if you see bird waste piling up in them.

  2. Not to worry, they know how to take care of themselves if they are left free!

  3. I have a bird also. What you need is have a nice clean cage and some paper towels (or cloth towels if you don't mind cleaning them a lot). You should clean the cage about once a week or sometimes more. If your bird is an adult and can fly, you should consider clipping it's wings if you don't want it to fly away (only if you will keep it). Basically you should feed it baby food or canned dog food. The dog food is the better option because it has more nutrients in it an will help the bird be more healthy. My bird loves the beef "Natural Choice: High Energy" kind but you should experiment with other types. If you opt for a different kind, make sure the ingredients start with meat. Also, check to see if the protein percent is at least 10%. That is what we give my bird. You might want to bathe it too. Make sure that if the bird is a baby you don't feed it water directly. They can drown or get pneumonia if you do that. My suggestion is if your bird isn't picky about what you give him that you feed him high water content fruits and vegetables. Otherwise take an eyedropper and give him one drop at a time. Hope this helps.
