  1. I have the canon XTI so the process should be similar. You can set up the camera on the tripod with the timer, or buy the remote to take the picture yourself. Read in the manual how to "lock the focus" you will want to focus on something that will be the same distance away that you will be sitting. that way you will be the focus.

Take a ton of pictures at different angles and in different places, you never know what you will get.  Try some in black and white also. If you don't have a photo editor you can download Paint.net for free and it is simple to use.

you can also hook-up your camera to a computer through the usb cable and take pictures with the computer. I believe if you use the EOS software that comes with the camera.

that way you can see what the camera is seeing before you take the shot.

  2. Use your tripod and the self - timer. Most DSLRs you can set a custom self-timer and take multiple photos with one click and enough time to change up your poses between exposures. You can use something that will be at the same distance as you will be in the photo and set auto-focus on the camera.

  3. put your camera on the tripod. use a timer

set up your shots...use props or whatever

just look thru the viewfinder to see what is

in the shot and put yourself in there. easy

  4. use a good lighting source, and interesting composition (like laying down, standing in a neat part of thehouse, outside, doorway, with cool object) and then do whatever you can to take the picture.

it has very little to do with the camera and everything to do with how you build your picture. tell a story. or make it interesting for the viewer. you need to be a good model, actor, set designer, stylist, and photographer all at once to make it work.

but the best ones are free and do not look labored. so take a lot of pictures of things you like, and have FUN
