How to take the smell out of something?

I have a lamp that I bought in March from Sears. It's a really nice basic floor lamp with a dark brown wooden base and a beige shade. The shade smells awful. Like animal hide or something... I can't really explain it. I had tried to spray febreeze on it at one point but that didn't do anything. Is there any kind of method that you can use to reduce smells, take the smell out of something??

  1. I have used white vinegar to get rid of smells in fabric.  I saw this article the other day and sprayed my couch (dog sleeps on it), the carpet, and my curtains.  Once the vinegar smell went away, The whole livingroom smelled fresh and clean.  I used straight vinegar in an old spray bottle.   I couldn't believe it.

I would make sure to test a small spot to make sure it doesn't damage your lamp shade.  I did not have any damage to my material.
