How to teach 2nd graders fractions?

am i supposed to teach them numerator and denomintaor?

  1. We used to have little different colored tiles that were broken up in to different pieces and when they were put together they made a whole.  I recommend trying to find something like that.  Young children also love to color so something they could color in would be great for them.


  2. Parts of a whole: divide pizzas, cookies, apples, oranges.  

    Fold and cut up little paper circles and squares, laying them on the whole.  "How many out of how many all together?"  Teach the terms numerator and denominator after they have the concepts down.  Play "which would you rather have?"  (eg. 3/4 or 1/2) and then have them lay out that many fractions of the same size circle and check their answers.

    For parts of a group, sort jelly beans, mini M&M 100 calories packs or cereal.  Have each person identify what fraction of their bag is blue, red, yellow, green, brown, etc.  This is also a good lead in to probability.  What would I be most likely to get?
