How to teach a potty trained 2 year old how to use the BIG potty?

My 2 year 7 months son has been totally potty trained since He turned 2 last December. At preschool he will use a small toddler toilet, but I haven't tried to get him on our adult size toilet at home--we still use his "potty." He will stand and tinkle in the big toilet, that's all. I think he's ready--he was also relatively easy to potty train. How do I start? Do I get a small seat to attach to the big one? Help!!!! Also how to start teaching wiping? Is he too young for that? First time mom--sorry to be so blunt.

  1. simple just tell him that that the big potty is the new potty

  2. Get a piece of toilet paper and draw a bulls eye on it then let it float flat in the toilet water. Let ur kid try and hit it. Make it a game. Or buy one of those tiny potty seats for the new adjustments.

  3. keep the small seat that fits over the regular seat, flushable wipes, and a sturdy non-slip stool next to the toilet.  show him how to place the seat and stool, and how to use ONE wipe (and to re-close them so they don't dry out).  dish out lots of praise.  you will probably need to be nearby/help for awhile still.  if he's unsteady or uncomfortable getting seated alone then you may need to wait a bit longer.

  4. Go to Toys R Us an get them one of THESE!!!

You just place them over you're regular toilet seat, they're padded and they keep 'em from falling in. To teach him to wipe, maybe you should start with flushable baby wipes.

  5. Teach him to hold himself up by placing both hands on ether side of the toilet seat.  Stand in front of him and he could hold your legs too if that's more comfotable for him.  If you can, I wouldn't bother with a potty seat.  He needs to learn to use toilets without a potty seat too.

Some kids are afraid of the flushing... you might need to get him used to that.

There are toddler wipes that are like baby wipes but smaller and flushable.  Teach him to wipe, but don't expect himto be able to do it properly for a couple of years.

  6. Yep, getting a small seat is a good idea, the thought of falling down the big loo can be a bit daunting for small kids. Most kids like to be like their parents, so just draw attention to the fact that that's where you go, even announcing to him when you are going to go to the toilet to get him used to it! And getting a stool so he can climb up by himself is also a help.

Wiping up after themselves comes later. I haven't got to that stage yet, my eldest is three, but as I understand they should be getting into the habit of doing that by the time they reach school age, so by about 4 years or so. Never to young to let them have a try after you've wiped them up first though!

Whatever you do, don't get too stressed if he doesn't take to it straight away, kids pick up on things like that and it can take a lot longer as a result. Good luck!

  7. Yes!  We bought an attachment (soft) that fit on the big potty.  Until they get their balance, you have to stay right there with them.  I always let them try to wipe, then I would turn them around and check it.  If needed, I would wipe again.  When they are older, and have good hand control for wiping, then let them do it themselves.  Check underwear (panties if a girl) to see if they are doing a good job.  Sorry so long!

  8. get a stool for him to climb up on so he can sit down safely.  He probably start learning to wipe himself around 4 or so (maybe 3.5 if your lucky).   You can teach him when he's that old by taking turns wiping.  Eventually he will get the hang of it.

  9. I did the small seat on top of the big seat due to fall ins..they can loose their grip and be scared they are going to fall in so the smaller seat that holds their bottoms and they feel "safer".  My daughter did that and then progressed to going without it on her own.  Also, I showed my daughter how to wipe and flush.  Let him try it a couple of times on his own and see if he can do it on his own.  I wouldn't say he is too young.  My daughter started wiping herself shortly after becoming fully potty trained when she was a little over two.

  10. Tell him it is time and take small toddler toilet away and he well have no were to go but the big toilet my son always used the big toilet
