Question:

How to teach dog his name?

My family has been taking care of this dog for 4 months now and he still doesn't respond to his name. His owner is out of the country at the moment, because of a family emergency, but she only had the dog for a month or two before she left. He knows some basic obedience commands (sit, stay), but he will not respond to his name. We call him by his name all the time and reward him every time he reacts with a treat, but he will never respond if he knows that we don't have any food on us. Is there any other way to teach this dog his name? After 4 months we're beginning to wonder if he'll ever catch on.

  1. repeat his name to him constantly. A dog refers to his name out of repetition so the more you say it, the more they will recognize it.  Good Luck

  2. Like kbuff said, just keep calling him by that name and he'll catch on. It might just take some time.

  3. Keep telling him his name until he comes and give him a treat.http://www.petexpertise.com/dog-training...                           Hope this helps!

  4. Are you sure he knows the commands?  Are they verbal commands or hand signals?

I ask because it sounds as if this dog is hearing impaired. Responding only when treats are offered indicates that this dog is responding to his sense of smell. Have it checked out.
