I want my son to learn the history of maori culture and was wandering how they do it in montessori as he is currently attending a montessori centre where they are learning about cultures but don't have any resources for the maori culture

Any ideas you can give me would help, thanks

  1. You asked this in preschool, so I assume he is in an age 3-6 classroom.

Interest in other cultures generally begins with the cultural materials, especially the maps (though not always.  Just speaking from some experience).  From there, children begin to take an interest in geography and begin exploring books that talk about different cultures and places.

That is where I would begin.  Take a trip to the library and learn about the culture yourself (if you don't already know a lot about it.  Even if you do, you'll likely learn something new).

There is no real "set" way to teach something like this.  The child simply takes an interest in it and goes with it.  Look for art work, artifacts, pictures, and customs of the people.

Do they have certain foods you can try?

Do they celebrate a religious festival you can celebrate?

If you're in the New Zealand area, is there a town you can visit?

The way to deal with this is really just to simply keep up an interest in it and try to experience some of the cultural aspects.
