How to teach myself how to play the piano?

i already know the basics, such as all of the different notes. but all i ever really do with my piano is check out video tutorials on how to play songs i like and i can pretty much learn them. but that doesn't take much skill, anyone can do that. i want to really learn. a lot of people are self taught. like no books and no teachers. how do you do that? am i on the right track? by learning songs via youtube? i wanna teach myself without all of that, how do people do it without the help?

Well its hard to do it without help, you should listen to the song and find out which keys they are pressing while testing the tone with your keys without a book its pretty hard unless you knew it off by heart. it would help alot with a laptop cause you can have it with you while testing instead of running back and forth.

people that do that are gifted, if its a problem for you, then your obviosly not gifted and you do need a book, or videos to help you out

its really a natural talent if you can teach yourself all of that.. not only do you have to keep challenging yourself, but you cant forget about the theory side of piano.. such as practicing sightreading, composing, and the technical names for everygthing. It would be very helpful for you to find a book that takes you through each step. Even if you have a book to help, your still teaching yourself! Good luck :]

Learn how to read music.  There are several websites that have music theory information available for free (check out links below).  If you already know the names of the notes on the piano keyboard, then once you learn how to read music, you should be able to pick up a piece of sheet music and figure it out.  I would suggest you get some kind of book though, as a reference, and a source of printed music.
