I am thinking of buying a large plot of land for a botanical garden.

How can I tell if the soil will be good to grow a botanical (not necessarily crops) in?

  1. The subject of soils, soil mixtures, and fertilizers has been made far too complex and mysterious. At the start, there are only a few things you need to know. You will learn by doing, and more easily than by reading, Soil has two functions to support plants and to nourish them and fertilizers or plant foods contribute to this second essential function. http://www.lovelygreenhouses.com/soils-a...

  2. A botanical garden has to alter the soil for much of what it grows anyway, because they come from many regions

If it has a healthy crop of weeds, or wheat, it won't have serious problems

You would have to have soil tests done, then make the specific changes according to what plants you want to grow in any given area.

  3. You should take a number of samples from different areas.  Look at the soil to see if it is clay or sandy or nice crumbly loam.  A dark color is usually a good sign.  Look around to see what the drainage is like.  You can take soil samples to the county extension service for analysis.   There will be a minimal charge.  Any dirt can be amended to make it good for your purpose, but it may be a bit of trouble and expense.
