  1. a girl after my own heart! tell the person that the waitress/waiter really depends on the tips they receive, after all, they don't get much of a salary, so tips are literally their "bread and butter", any reasonable person will understand this. this person is providing a service, and they deserve to be compensated as such. great question!

  2. Just come out and tell them.

  3. tell them what a ***** it is to work in a restaurant and slap them across the face

  4. A lot depends on who the he or she is. If it is your customer you could get excited about a nice tip another patron left mentioning how it will help a lot. Don't over do it and don't speak directly to that patron you want to tell.

If it is a friend or family member it can come up in casual conversation when a restaurant or eating out is mentioned by commenting on how heavily the waitresses rely on the tips as income.

If it is in the persons heart they will respond. I don't really think you could force it.

I have known people whose outlook changed as they grew older or wiser.

My mother explained tipping to my brother and I while eating in a restraunt, he was 7 and I was 9. She laughs about it today because we gave everything we had as a tip. That was more than 40 years ago.
