Question:

How to test drive cars in different dealers without hassle?

I am looking to buy an used BMW, Mini, or a new Mazda. How can I visit a few dealers without wasting time at each sales desk and committing to one vehicle? I want to make this purchase right, so I want to test drive every single option possible. How can I make dealers to let me test drive, without making them think that I'd sign today? Is there any phrases I can use to say to a salesperson, so I can friendly move to another dealer without making him too mad?

I often see customer car reviews online that people compared many cars and test drove the h**l out of them before buying the one they want. How do they do that? When I visit car dealers and test drive a car, usually salespersons are very sticky to not let me go. I have to waste a lot of time like I'm interested but the price is too high, then walk away (making them think I'll never come back).

Looks like I can spend only one day (9-6ish) to decide, and hoping to test drive at least three. I live in Los Angeles if that helps. Tnanks

  1. when you walk into the dealership tell them you are just looking and than tell them you are just looking and because most car dealers are deaf tell them you are just looking

  2. Tell them that you need to drive each different car that you've been considering to see which one you like better. And if their car is better, that you might be back. After you are done driving, say thanks and walk away.

What is the salesperson going to do, stand in front of you so you can't get back into your car and leave?

  3. Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to play the game. But usually as long as they believe you are serious about purchasing a car and not just joyriding (especially in the case of a BMW) they will have no problem allowing you to test drive any car you are interested in. Just explain to them that you will not commit to buying anything until you've driven car models X, Y, and Z, and nothing they can say will change your mind. Also, make sure you dress nicely (not in jeans and a t-shirt). It makes a difference.

If they ask you to do anything "inside" except copy your driver's license and insurance card, tell them you're very busy and if they continue to waste your time, you're going to leave. Don't even sit down if they offer, just tell them to copy your license and get the keys so you and the salesman can go.
