  1. If there is a winery near you, most of them offer a tasting class. I live near Messina Hof Vineyard and Winery, and they offer a short tour of the vineyard and winery along with a tasting of 4 different wines and ports. They teach you how to look for the differents flavors, how to pair them with food, what temperatures they are best at, and we got a free wineglass to boot. All for only $5 a person! Not bad! Of course, if you don't live in Texas this might not help. LOL

Some of the things they taught us at Messina Hof...

For whites, "trilling" brings out the flavors. Take a sip in your mouth, lean your head slightly forward and allow the wine to fall forward to your lips as you softly suck in air through the wine. Swallow, then blow the inhaled air out through your nose. This allows the flavors of the wine to pass over your palate and the aroma is brought out through your nose. You will feel the acidity of a white along the sides of the back of your tongue.

For reds, try "clucking". Keeping your head even with your shoulders, sip the wine and cluck your tongue against the top of your palate in the back. Swallow the wine, then exhale through your mouth. This will bring out the warmth of the red, and you will start to experience the various flavors as the aromas pass over your tongue.  You will experience more full bodied reds in the back of your throat. Ports with a high alcohol content may choke you the first time, especially if you get adventurous and try trilling port!

When inhaling the aromas of wine, bring the glass up to the devider between the nostrils and inhale the fumes through just one nostril. It seems to help distinguish the different aromas better than using both nostrils at once. There was a technical explanation for this, but it eludes me right now.

Williams Sinoma (sp) offers kits with instructions on how to taste and pair wines through their online store. It somes with books of instructions and vials of scents to teach you how to identify the different flavors and aromas in wines like blueberry, cherry, chocolate and so on. My dad and I got big into wines after taking a winery tour, and we have the kits now too. FUN! And tasty too!!! Good luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of wine! SLAINTE!!!
