  1. Do what you would do for any party. Just take care not to violate eating rules that might apply to your guest. Depends on where they come from.

They would not expect to have the same food as at home. They visit you to experiment your way of live.

  2. I guess it would depend on where you are and where your student is from. Do something typical of your country's culture. We are in Australia and when we picked up our exchange student we took her to have fish and chips down on the beach and then had a welcome barbeque at our place in the evening. We invited a small group of friends and were lucky that our daughters had learnt a little of our student's language at school so they could communicate with her.

One thought though - if your student has just arrived in your country they could be feeling a bit overwhelmed or even jet lagged so a quiet welcome would suit them better and then give them a big sendoff with the friends that they have made while staying with you when they go back home.

  3. say he she is australian mix australian say http://www.aussiefoodshop.com/australian... with items of your country he/she will apreciate the mix. cheers

  4. I was a former exchange student, then we reciprocated & had a gazilliomn exchange students---they LOVE when you serve something 'USA-typical'---I know they all loved hamburgers & our kind of salades....they'll love it & you will do just wonderfully, I know it. Best of luck---btw, what country is she'he coming from---now you could add, like maybe for dessert, something they LOVE...works beautifully!

  5. It would help if you mentioned where the exchange student was coming from.

I would say that it would be good to keep things small.  It's really overwhelming when you first arrive to a new country, and there are all of these new sights, smells, and people that you've never seen/experienced before.  It may be especially unnerving if you don't understand the language that well.

I would say to keep it small and intimate.  Find out if he or she has any food allergies, or any foods that they really dislike.  (Food allergies is more important than the likes/dislikes though).  You can plan the food from there.

Hopefully you will have this welcoming party a few days after the student has arrived, so he or she will be able to adjust themselves even a little bit, and slowly break out of their jet-lag.  Definitely don't have it for the night that the student arrives, since they'll be exhausted from their trip.

I would keep it simple.  I think your exchange student will really appreciate the effort you took to make him or her feel welcomed, regardless of the scale of the party that you plan for them.
