I want to dye these gloves i made from white knee socks. Can i just dip them in water mixed with food coloring? What are other ways I can dye them instead of buying a tie dye kit?

  1. Most food coloring these days is designed not to stain.  It'll wash out, or at least most of it will.  Get a pack of fabric dye.  If you shop well, it'll only be a couple bucks.

Hello, this is Rain, your Guide to DIY Fashion at About.com. I have been tie dying for years, now, so I thought I'd give your question a shot.

First of all, I love the fact that you made gloves from your socks. To tie dye them, you really should get a tie dye kit, because this is a special kind of dye that will permanently bond to the fabric by actually altering the molecular structure of the fibers and becoming part of the fiber itself. Wow, that's a mouthful. It's true, though.

About the only thing you can use as a dye at home without is all washing out is coffee. Kool-aid is a complete no-no, because it's just going to stain everything in the wash.

I have a full tutorial of how to tie dye just about anything with photos and easy step-by-step instructions:

There is also a forum so you can ask any questions while you're working on your project. Also, since you are into DIY fashion, I hope you'll take a look around at the other projects and let me know what you think.

Hopefully that helps...have a great day!
