80 or 90 model and there is a small bolt and nut that goes somewhere for the gear changer on the back sprocket

  1. The gear changer on the back sprocket is called the rear derailleur. It hangs below the slot for the rear axle, which is known as the dropout. On many older, better bikes there is a s***w that threads through the back of the dropout to act as a stopper for the placement of the rear axle in the dropout. Loosen the rear axle, back off that s***w and slide the rear wheel backward. This will tighten the chain.

    If your bike doesn't have one, just slide the axle back until the chain is tight. If it's already maxed out to the back of the dropout, you have to remove a link in the chain and start again.


  2. If you have a 10 speed bike you shouldn't need to tighten the chain. The spring tension in the derailleur takes up the slack (which is necessary to allow for the different chain lengths necessary to accommodate the various gear cog combinations). If the chain is really too long (droops even when in the 2nd largest rear cog and largest front ring), you need to take one or more links out of the chain using a chain tool (See link).
