I train in Olympic taekwondo. I'm a member of my school's taekwondo team which will compete in the city meet that will come in less that a month. This is my senior year which means this is the last year that i will ever compete in this competition. I want to give out my best. I'm only a low yellow belt and our practice is postponed for more than two weeks!!! I want to train on my own so that i will be prepared for this can you give me tips on how to train without a instructor and a spar mate?

  1. A punching bag is the best answer I can think of.

In fighting, If you haven't noticed.

( fighters train physically without a sparring partner )

Run up steps with boxing gloves on.  Hit a punching bag.

Do some swimming.  Lots and lots of exercise.

A yellow belt isn't bad, it means you have the basics, and quite honestly that's all you need.

Be prepared to rise above your opponent, and the only way to prepare is physically, and mentally.

You can always watch sparring videos.  While watching a instructional video, do push ups, sit ups, etc..

  2. lol what answers.

You will need to work on your shuffling(foot work), fakes(to fake the enemy into kicking by mistake or moving forward to attack with a surprise), and most importantly your agility and power. You need to be able to jump multiple times in the air if needed. An example of what i mean would be:

jumping reverse side kick or jumping reverse hook kick. Both two good counter attacks for when the opponent is coming at you.

Also another popular one is the multiple attack of round kicks. Keep hopping on one leg while you kick with the other doing a round house kick. Keep switching them very fast to try and lend a point.

REMEMBER THAT THEY GO BY WHAT THEY HEAR FOR POINTS. So a strong kick to the chest protector is needed to score, a weak kick will not count.

  3. if you have a puch bag do skipping 3x3 minute rounds and do 3x3 min rounds on the bag to practise your kicks and punches, pretend the bag is an opponent, do left, turn and right turn kicks fast, with 180's, and axe kick when you get close to the bag explode with fast puches maybe draw the big dots on the bag like the body armour. this sort of thing should keep ya in decent shape till your tuition starts again. hope this helps.

  4. dude im in taekwondo and the best thing is practice your sidekick no one uses it and its the most powerful

  5. Just do what you do in class.

It's hard to motivate yourself, but do it anyway.

Start with a warm up, stretching, running or running in place, jump rope, etc.

If you have a heavy bag, use it, if not, then practice your kicks in the air like you would in class.

Do 10 front leg round kicks with your right leg back, then 10 on the left, then go rear leg round kicks, 10 on each side.  Keep it going with front kicks, side kicks, hook kicks, spin side kicks, back kicks, etc.

Practice jumping, do "shadow sparring", imagine having a living moving opponent that attacks, then shuffle back and counter, etc.

You know what to do, it's just a matter of making yourself do it.  Now get off the computer and go do it!
