I am 16 years old. 200 + pounds and already have a fairly large muscle mass and fairly high fitness levels. I also have a very good diet. I am trying out to play rugby at a high level. I have not yet recieved any information on training. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on training. I want to train all aspects ... e.g. agility. strength. power. speed. acceleration ... and so on ... but am not sure how often to do training (to prevent fatigue) on each aspect and what drills are best to improve my general game. Is it advisable i go to see a personal trainer and get proffesional information? I play back row and would like to also know which aspects i really really need to work on to be a largely better player? Thanks :)

  1. Read the training manuals on sites like the IRB coaching site, they are of great help, alternate, read Rugby World who print each month a training tip aide.  Join a good local side that has a proven track record and make sure you talk and listen to the coaches and players already there and the Senior Veterans who can help you. Also you will need to decide what position you would really like, from your weight mass stated you may want to think of moving to the pack position, but not knowing your height and agility it is difficult to suggest Lock, Prop, 8, Second Row position, again the coaches at the side will be able to asses your abilities and guide you if you are not sure.

Learn the rules of the game as well as training, make sure you understand what will be required of yourself and your team mates, train with ball carrying, passing, tackle and tackle avoidance, dont forget its not all speed, strength, agility, you will need intelligence, understanding and the ability to read situations, to know when to pass, defend, attack, react in the right way.  Most players do not realise how complicated rugby really is and the reasons for the set piece, the free play, the attack and defence.

Also remember that OVER training is also a killer, train too much and you can defeat the whole point as you will pick up too many injuries on the field or in the gym.  Regular checks for injuries and proper treatment, dont do what many do (I done this myself when I played) and shrug of the aches and pains saying they will heal themselves by next week (I pay for it now as an ex prop with tendernitis, joint problems and muscle strains) get proper treatment and recovery as soon as you feel that tweak or pain!

Good Luck for the future and keep at it.

  2. get stronger? =)

  3. do suicides, short distance sprints, and jogs

twice a week will be enough or you might injure some muscles

  4. Dont you play for a team who has a coach?.rugby players gennerally train two three times a week and play games/matches on the weekend. your coach should be able to give you the information you need ,by watching your style of play as all players have different needs he will suss out your strengths and weaknesses and work on them from there. i9f you dont have a coach ,pop into the local rugby club and ask someone for some advice there.
