im 16 and i want to start playing rugby but im not sure where to start. i play starting varsity mid-fielder on my high school soccer team so im im pretty good shape.

are there any particular excersises i should do before finding a league to play at? does anyone know of a good league in the atlanta area?

i am not in a league at the moment and any drills and skills i should learn but that can be done without other people would be awsome. im the first one at my school to be interested so im on my own at the moment.

  1. i recommend a book called complete rugby conditioning by dan luger and some pook guy...it has everything you need including individual drills....itll ansswer all your prayers...but for now the most important hing in rugby is your legs not your arms like this guy said....make sure your legs are fit and strong...squats..running,,plyometrics and ladders will  improve you leg power which is hte most important thing in everything rugby. after your legs concentrate on your core back and shoulders....use a roman chair or get down on your knees put your hands behind your head and have someone or something hold your ankles and do a reverse situp.do lat pull downs and military presses as well as shoulder raises...the last thing is your arms....bench press, weighted pushups, and dips are all you really need. as far as leagues in the atl...look it up. google rugby in atlanta..

  2. try playing touch rugby for a bit that is good to get your ball handling skill and its fun when u start

  3. Football and rugby require different strengths. Football is more lower body strength, while rugby requires both upper and lower body strength. In rugby you need to be able to grab and hold and twist players, throw a ball etc all of which require upper body dtrength. I would imagine that your aerobic fitness is fine though.

I would wor on some upper body stuff initially, but it all depends what position you play.
