I have this pony and he's the cutest thing but he does not respect me or my space he always turns his butt too me out in the pasture

how can i change this?

i have no round pen i do have a lunge whip

i try to tap the ground behind him to get him to move away from me, but he acts like the whip isn't even there i've tapped him on the butt and nothing is working

he's really a nice little guy only 9 hh

he leads fine and was broke once in his 10 years of life but i dunno now he doesn't like his feet or ears being messed with so i'm working on that

the last time he was ridden was 5 months ago, he belonged to a little girl

any training ideas to get him to submit to me?

thanks!

  1. I like the answer from teddy to chase him around the field. Do you have any electric tape to fence a slightly smaller area?

He sounds typical of a little fellow who has got a bit sour.

Could you add some variety to his work, ie, small jumps, crazy things to bend through, walks down the road. Give him lots of pats the instant he does something nice. In the photo he just doesn't look that happy - is he up to date with worming?

I'd think games and tricks with him. And follow any naughty behavior with a very quick smack and pat the instant he stops being naughty. You have to be very quick with smacks and no mucking around half nagging smacks. A smack for a horse means you have to do it whole heartedly - or it's just nagging. A horse will change after 3 smacks and growls if it takes longer you're not being effective enough and just nagging.

He looks like a real cuttie and I'm sure your hack loves the company - or is he thinking he'd rather have a beautiful maiden in the paddock not this little old devil! Happy riding :)

  2. you have to remember YOU are in charge. if you want to lunge him then put his lead rope on and move to the side of him and tighten the rope. make sure he doesnt come to you just have him go in a circle if he wont move do more than tap him on the butt show him your serious.

  3. Instead of putting him in a round pin but him in the pasture and chace him around. This is showing your domince to the pony. Eventually the pony should summit and when you stop chasing him he should walk right up to you.

Also just working with him with a halter and leadrope will help. You can work on walking and halting. You can also get him to back up. If he backs up that is a huge sign of respect.

I know you said you did not a round pen but if you just have a lunge rope you can lunge him anywhere you want. Lunging is the best respect exersice I can think of. Working on transitions and getting him to listen to you on the lunge line would be awsome. Hope this helps and good luck with your pony.

By the way he is awful cute!!
