How to transfer bamboo plant from one spot to another?

So there's some bamboo growing across the street from my house and I've gotten permission from the owner to transfer some of the bamboo to plant against the fence in my backyard - how do I go about transferring the plant though?

It's fully grown bamboo, too - so they are long shoots of the plant.

There will be long root runners coming off the existing bamboo.

Cut a long piece and bury it in the new location.

(Plenty of water).

Careful. - The stuff is hardy and very invasive.

once you put it in, it's the devil to get rid of it or

keep it from spreading to where you don't want it.

The day before you intend to dig, soak both the new site and the old pretty thoroughly.

Dig *large* hole in new location.

Dig large clump of bamboo.

Move the clump to a new hole -- you may need slings.

Fill the rest of the hole with soil.

Water, and continue to do so in the next few months.

(Don't forget to fill the hole up at the neighbor's place, too!)

If this bamboo species appears to go dormant in your area, it would be best to transplant during the dormant period.

Just go to the neighbors plant and show it where to go by pointing.  Bamboo is a "grass"  Weed is another name for it.   Get a piece of the shoot of the plant and add water.

I just did this about a month ago and while it's not dead it doesn't appear to be growing either.  Bamboo is very sensitive.  Good luck!

I think you will be a very disappointed with Bamboo. I  It is the most evasive thing in this world.  You will not know it is doing anything for about 5 years then it will start spreading and popping up every place, you cannot cut it down to kill it comes right back, using  Roundup is liking  fighting a fire with a water gun.  The roots is massive.  It will grow to 17 feet tall in couple weeks.  Only thing I see good about bamboo it is pretty.  Do a Google for kill bamboo and read the horror stories.

Dig and get soil with the shoots you wish to transplant. do not cut close to the plant. Then water is he key to growing in new location. You may also use some Jobs Plant Spikes as they will help prevent the plant from the shock of transplanting.
