If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder…

You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 70.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.

**Please Note There is no 8mm or Hi 8 to VHS Adapter that currently exsists. This type of VHS Adapter only exsists with VHS-C tape**

You need an analog to digital converter.  Some MiniDV camcorders have a passthough feature which does this, or you can get a dedicated converter.  Kworld DVD Maker or Pinnacle Dazzle are examples of the sort of thing most people get, but have a look at the Canopus ADVC range if you want the best quality.

n order to accomplish that, you will need a converter box to convert the videotapes into digital format to the computer.

The Canopus ADVC-100 will be perfect. Once the videotapes are in the computer, you would need a video-editing program to edit your digitalize footage. Both computers, MAC or PC can do video editing. Mac computers come with a standard video editing program imovie.

If you wanted to go professional, then there is another program, Final Cut Studio; cost $1299.99 that comes bundle with DVD Studio Pro. You can edit the video footage and play it back to tape or burn the finished movie file on a DVD.

On the PC side there is Moviemaker, which is standard, but if you want professional, then Adobe Premiere is the way to go and Adobe DVD Encore for DVD output.
