How to translate centimetres into hands??

Question

I've always used the 'hands high' measuring system, so when I was looking for horses in a magazine, they were all advertised as like '148cm' e.t.c?! So how many hands is 148cm equal to please?

One 'hand' in horse-speak is 4 inches. Look on a ruler to see how many cm there are in 4" and it's just a case of simple maths thereafter.

An inch is 2.54 centimeters (if you use 2.5 you will be off on large measurements.  A hand is 4 inches.  To help use a metric inglish converter and it will be even more accurate since even this conversion figure is rounded off.

Here I found a converter.  Use centimeters  to hands (non-equine).  For some reason they state a 'non equine' hand but I checked and it was 4 inches so they are the smae measurement.  Not sure why it stated non equine .  

Oh I just realized why they say non equine.  They will give the decimal as 14.5 for 14 and 1/2 hands which is 14.2 hh in equine talk.  So take the decimal part and multiply by 4 and that will give the inches on top of the hands.  Thus 14.5 take the .5 X 4 = 2 inches more than 14 or 14.2 hands.

You can also take cm and multiply by .984

A 128cm pony is 12.2hh, 138 is 13.2 148 is 14.2 and so on.

I used to jump BSJA with ponies, and they were always classified this way, I owned a 13.2 and was jumping the 138 class.

There's about 10cm in a hand, so a 148cm horse is 14.3hh (ish)

divide by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 4 to get hands.

So:- 148 divided by 2.54= 58.3inches,divided by 4= 14.6 hands.
