Question:

How to transplant a crape myrtle ?

I have a crape myrtle tree; it is about 3 years old, and about 3' tall, and 3' wide (I grew it from a tiny sapling). Due to an home addition, I need to move the tree about 10' from its current location. I realize this is a VERY unsatisfactory time to move any plant, but what should I do to ensure my tree lives? (ANY info or ideas is very much appreciated!)

  1. Water it well several days before moving it.  This will also make it easier to dig if you have heavy soil.  Dig the new planting hole, making it the same depth, but wider than the rootball.  Cut out 1/3 of the branches, thinning the tree.  This will balance the loss of roots from the move.  Below is a link on pruining crepe myrtles.

Dig a one foot deep trench around the base at least 18 inches from the trunk.  Use a shovel in the bottom of the trench to get under the rootball, loosening it from all sides.  Have an old rug/tarp/etc. close, and after you loosen the rootball use the shovel to life it onto the rug.  Drag the tree on the rug/tarp to the new planting hole, and slide it in, making sure it is set at the same depth.  Remember that your soil will settle some after planting.  Setting it too deep can cause stem rot.  Water well, and use a root stimulator.  Keep the tree watered regularly.

The high heat is a problem, but as long as your temperature drops below 78° overnight, and you keep the plant watered it should be OK, even if you have very loose soil that shakes free during the move.  In Texas, where I am, fall is a good time to plant trees and shrubs.  Their roots keep growing through the winter so they emerge strong the next spring.  Perhaps you will get some relief from the heat soon.  Best of luck!

  2. Be sure to get as much of the root ball as possible.Dig a hole at least half again as big as the root ball.Use a good panting mix.Set the plant a little bit above grade (it will settle a little).Fill the hole a couple times with water as you fill it with the potting mix, firming the soil as you add.Just to be on the safe side add a collar of dirt around the plant trunk  to hold water (this will settle and blend in), Come out to the edge of your planting hole to put collar.A little water soulble fertilizer or plant start will help.
