Question:

How to travel 5 days in a car with a dog?

I am moving from Nevada to North Carolina and I will most likely be driving there. I have a 1 year old Bichon Frise who will be traveling with me. I'm wondering is it easier to drive the 5 days with her in the car or for me to drive there and then fly home and fly her back out with me? If you have any suggestions for both forms of transportation that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

  1. I had a similar situation come up with my dad's dog. Continental is the best if you choose to fly. They have a separate area for animals and they keep it temperature controlled, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Oh, and they'll fly just her, you don't have to buy your own ticket.

If you drive, just make sure you have plenty of chew toys, fresh water, and are prepared to make plenty of pit stops. Map out your hotels before you leave, most places don't allow dogs. Have fun on your trip!

  2. i didnt get this part?? "for me to drive there and then fly home and fly her back out with me?"

  3. when i had to do something of the sort, what i did was if my back seat folded down to get to the trunk, i flipped it down and put it back there and made sure it was comfortable for the dog

  4. I haven't had any problems with my carolina dog.

  5. LOL i av the same dog and im about to go on an 12 hour drive.. i know its not 5 days, first where would you sleep? if in the car then maybe, i think because my Bichon Frise (who is 1 year old) is perfect in the car i think you will be fine with the dog!

  6. I think it will be easier to drive.  Then you know your dog is okay.

Here is a link to an article that will help you.

You will need to stop to let your dog relieve herself and to feed and water the dog.  They have travel bowls for that.

  7. You can absolutely drive with her. Not only will you have good company, but you will also be potty partners. When ever one of you needs to stop and stretch or stop and go you'll have each other.

Just remember to stop every few hours to stretch!! Good luck on your adventure!

  8. Well I live in CA but my husband is stationed in VA so I take my dog back and forth. On the airplane you have to get a carrier which is accepted by the airlines and you just put you dog in there and she has to go under the seat in front of you. We fly delta because they seem to have been the most pet friendly. The only thing is that your pet counts as your carry on item so if you need anything else you are basically not going to have room. Also they have sedatives for pets but I wont use them because there have been a lot of incidents about the pets having health problems with their equilibrium due to being in the air and being on a sedative they cant pop their ears.

If you drive make sure you have plenty paper towels, water, food, newspaper, potty pads, leash, things of those sorts. Every 2 hours you should make a stop so you both can get out and walk around and use the restroom facilities. The time limit depends on how much your pet needs to use the bathroom. On an aircraft your dog will hold it for a LONG time! Its which ever you feel more comfortable with though. But if you have things layed out in your car just in case your dog needs to use the bathroom and you can't pull over then there is something protecting your seats.

    Hope that helps!

  9. Piece of cake. Take along a travel container for the dog if she's used to one, have water available in the car, stay at Motel 6 because they all take dogs, have the dog's own blanket for motel stays, take favourite toys, stop every couple of hours for a pee break and a little walk, take at least one longer walk before you get to where you stay for the night. Driving with you is much less stressful for the dog as well as safer.

  10. Just drive with her.

It'll be easier than driving all the way there without having to fly on a plane back to go and get her.

You'll be wasting too much money on driving there cause the price of gas and then on a plane ticket.

  11. I would put her in a crate for the trip and stop every few hours to walk her and let her go to the bathroom. You should be able to find hotels that allow pets, take some baggies to clean up her p**p when she goes in a public place.Have a good trip.

  12. Hello. Okay. Well first you need to figure out.... Where are you going to sleep overnight? A. keep driving B. The hotel the near you. C. other Okay. Now you need to know to keep things so your daughter is occupied. Then towels for your dogs on the seat. Let your dog go out every hour or two. bring a leash and a collar. Lol anyways. Do not fly. Well at least not with out you. Sorry i hope you move safely. Its great there :) AND besides its great to have a open road ROAD TRIP :)  Alright hope i helped email me if i did thanks:)
