  1. Depends where in downtown and where you want to go...

You should get a TTC map in the subway booth and the York Region Map (http://www.yrt.ca/maps/navigators/YRT-Vi...

You can take GO trains from Union station to one of the Go stations in York region (green lines on the map).  There should be connecting  YRT or VIVA buses from the terminal (extra fares). You can buy VIVA tickets at one of the VIVA ticket machines. I believe it can be used to transfer to YRT bus as well but you better check with the bus drivers.

Alternatively, you can take subway to Finch station or Don Mills station then take the YRT or VIVA buses (extra fare)

A few TTC buses (like Don Mills 25 north or Kenndy) do go to York region with extra fare. You can check out the TTC maps.

Note that YRT and VIVA buses don't run as frequent as TTC so you should better check out the schedule for expected waiting/transfer time.
