I am studying in Grenoble for the summer, and would LOVE to see Nice- Cote d'Azure. However, I would like to know the best way to go about getting to Nice... via train, bus, taxi, etc.

Merci beaucoup!

  1. We flew into and out of Grenoble and travelled to a place in the Dordorgne/Lot area.  We hired a car which meant we could stop in places like Lyon.  I guess its a matter of how cost effective it would be if its just you.  I guess it would be cheaper if you have a few people, but I enjoyed the journey and the first time I have driven on the right side of the road!!!!

  2. The TGV [hi-speed train] is the best option, it should take less than 3 hours.

  3. When you're alone, the cheapest solution to travel in France is train. I give you the address of SNCF wed site (it's national train company) : http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvH...

You can try different solutions and even make your reservation.

If you're more than one, rent a car can be cheaper, and you're free to visit contryside. Think that gazeline is very expensive in France and speedways are not free.

  4. don't take the plane, you will end up in an airport in some countryside far from the city. Taxi is to expensive.

The best way to travel in France and Europe is the train. The ticket price is not expensive and they have the best train in the world, very comfortable (take the TGV if you can). Or what you can do is rent a car (it will take about 3-4 hours from Grenoble to Nice) but you will enjoy the road for sure, France is a beautiful country... i used to leave there.

    Have fun

  5. The best way to go from Grenoble to Nice is to take the train. However there is no direct link between both these cities and there is mountain between them. So it is not very convenient. The most "conventional" way is to go to "Valence TGV" station by TER (regional train) (~1h) and then to Marseille by TGV (~1h more) and Nice (>2h more), possibly without transfer in Marseille.

If you love traveling by train I can also recommend you the "Train des Pignes" between Digne-les Bains, in the middle of the southern Alps, and Nice. It is a very nice railway line, but it is a more adventurous travel !!

  6. It's quite a ways from Grenoble to Nice (about 500 kilometres), so I wouldn't recommend taxi. I haven't been to Grenoble, so I don't know the train situation there, but that would be the best bet. I was in Nice last year, and it is gorgeous- you can't miss it. The beach we were at wasn't very sandy-it had big rocks that hurt your feet. Cannes has nicer beaches.
