How to treat a computer Virus?

These are my computers symptoms....

1) Programs taking longer to load than usual.

2) Constant freezing, and Firefox regularly *encounters a problem and has to close* (not-responding).

3) Computer randomly restarts itself, and there is no pattern as to when this happens.

4) Some files are still showing up, but have become unopenable.

5) Files randomly appear in the Recyle Bin (though they usually have 0MB?!)

6) Hard drive has unreasonable space - one day out of the blue it tells me I only have 40 MB left. the next day I have 4MB. And then 0MB - I'm not downloading or saving anything!! When I delete files, the disk space goes back up, only to go down again the next day.

7) Some programs have stopped working - Microsoft Word has completely disappeared! As has Limewire and my Java download.

This has been going on for some time now, as originally I thought a lot of it was my own fault and the fact that the computer is old, but I'm now pretty sure it's a virus. I don't know anything about viruses, but searching the web has given me the impression it might be a Trojan Horse??

My virus checker (Mcafee) is no longer installed, as it needs updating, but I don't know how to reinstall it as it seems to want disks and passwords and I don't have any of these because somebody else installed it for me! Will installing a new virus checker and running a scan to find the virus cure the problem? Or is it more serious than that? Should I buy a plug-in hard drive to back up my word documents and photo files before I run a scan?

I have Windows XP.

Thanks for any help on this - I don't understand computers at all!!
