  1. Treatment for anemia is usually relatively easy and involves a good diet and possibly iron supplements.  Your best bet is to see your doctor and talk to him/her about your options for treatment and to also be sure that you have anemia and not some other underlying problem.  He/she can also find out exactly what type of anemia problem you have.

  2. Yes & no. It depends on your H & H levels in your blood work, your overall health, age, & other medical conditions that you already have or that the anemia is making worse or causing.

You can get a blood transfusion or packed cells(just red blood cells, not the other blood cells in blood) as well as other medications and IV fluids.

They will also want to find out what is causing the Anemia and fixed that problem too.

So, you may be in the ER for several hours or admitted to the hospital for over night or several days.

  3. It depends on the severity and the type of anemia.  For simple iron deficiency anemia, the might give you an iron or a B-12 shot (or both).  Most of the time they perscribe iron suppliments (like, super good perecription ones) and send you home.  (even milder anemia can make you pass out... it depends on the person how low on iron they have to be to black out) The other posters diet comment was a good one - some people crave red meat (or ice chips!) which is your body trying to find iron.

Transfusions are for the VERY VERY seriously anemic, like people who have had massive blood loss.  If you needed a transfusion right away I doubt you'd be able to get on yahoo :p

Anemia has to be pretty bad or caused by something serious (like internal bleeding) to have them keep you in th e hospital.

  4. I have severe anemia - no supplements helped.

See a physician that does Dextron infusions. They are only done in the hospital (day treatment) IV and they can boost your iron levels for many months.

If you your anemia warrants this treatment - your physician should look for the root cause.

    What is your Ferritin count.

I get infusions when I drop to 20 or lower.

    Good Luck

  5. I'm not quite sure they can Cure anemia. They can help you with it, IE:give you iron pills, have u put more iron in ur diet (spinach) or get on birth control so ur period is lighter...but i'm not sure it's something they can just take away from u. i'm anemic and i have a normal life. i just take my pills, eat meat/spinach often and i'm fine.

  6. Blood transfusion are an option, as well as infusions of Iron. There are all done as 1 day procedures. You should also be taking iron supplements, eating food high in iron, as well as investigating if you have any on-going bleeding in your body that is causing the anemia.
