How to turn off hot water from a Gravity fed hot water tank?

I have a gravity fed hot water tank in my attic, I want to work on the hot water taps. Turning off the water mains in the street only turns off the cold water. Hot water still comes out the hot water taps.

Is there any way or is there anything in the the system that will allow the hot water to be turned off? There must be a valve to turn it off, I have not been in the attic to see yet, or do I have to let all the water drain off the tank to bring it empty? your help much appreciated. PS this is a very old system 1960s

  1. Your best option would be to contact a plumber in your area and ask their advice on what to do.

  2. in the side of the tap there is a valve just press it it will automatically stop.

  3. There will be a valve some where , to isolate the tank and also your hot water cylinder. Even the old systems had this.

This doesn't really help . In the end the tan k will run out of water and the hot water system. Do not forget to turn the power off to the hot water cylinder

  4. should be a valve on the heater if not you'll have to turn it off and open the lowest hot water tap usually the bathtub and let it drain
