  1. Why did the plumber disappear?  There must be something wrong he didnot tell u.  I'd be cautious if he don't comeback to turn water back on.  There should be a shutoff somewhere near the loft.  U should get another plumber to find out what's wrong.

  2. You need to start at the hot water heater and follow the pipes.  Look for a valve and see if it is closed or open.

Right or clockwise is open and left is closed.  If it has a long handle then if the handle is "with" the pipe it is open and closed if it is perpendicular to the pipe.

There could also be a shutoff at the shower faucet.  This would be behind the decorative plate (cover) it would just look like screws.  You turn them same as the valve above.

You could also call another plumber if you can not find a valve by yourself.

  3. Look in the back of the shower valve, it should be somewhere right there if it was done right.

  4. in loft ? sounds like they ran water line through attic-climb up there and see if they did- be turn off valve somewhere-normaly its in the wall behind false panel-some shower walls have false panel and its under tub
