  1. if you mean like with the swirls like normal tye dye shirts, then you just take the middle of the shirt, wrap the rubber band around and then put another rubber band on a couple inches away, and keep going until it's completely at the end, it should look like a unicorn horn when your done, then dip the end in whatever color dye you want, and then with the second from the front hold both ends up to make sure only the part you want is dyed.

if you mean simply dye a shirt one color, then get a tub and use the directions on the tye dye packet, then mix it and after your done mixing put the shirt in for a couple minutes, take it out and squeeze the extra dye and hang it on a clothes line over night, the next day put it in the washer ALONE and then the dryer.

  2. If you don't want the dye to wash out in the washing machine, all you have to do is use a good dye. Don't use Rit dye, because it fades rapidly in the wash. Rit-dyed garments should be hand-washed only, separately, in cool water; they should never be thrown in with your laundry. (Who has time for all that hand washing?!)

Good fiber reactive dyes will last on cotton through years of washing. You can't buy these dyes in the grocery store, but you can buy them at any good crafts store. They are actually much easier to use than Rit dye, because they do not require boiling hot water. What you have to do is buy a good tie-dye kit, and follow the instructions included in the kit. Avoid the Rit tie dye kit! Good brands of tie-dye kits include Jacquard, Dylon, Tulip, and Rainbow Rock. Sometimes even Walmart carries these kits. You can also buy Procion dyes by mail-order, or in the form of Tulip One Step Fashion Dyes or Dylon Cold Dyes.
