  1. I had to use an older version which works just fine.

    7.5.524

  2. Reinstall AVG. It didn't install properly the first time.

i am having this problem also.  Apparently lots of folk with AVG 8 are, too.  AVG is aware of the problme and is attempting to fix it.  Here is what one site says:

AVG's 8/16/08 update corrupt: "missing .bin file"

FYI, the 8/16/2008 update for AVG 8.0 Free is corrupt and reporting a missing .bin file. Don't bother reinstalling it or doing a system restore. From AVG's message board:

UPDATE .BIN error information... Aug 16th 2008

Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted... you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.

Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good util it is resolved.

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In other words, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.

So in short... please do not post to report the issue, its already known. Also please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue.

Also... for those user that did report the issue... thanks for the info.

So....  be patient, and we hope they will fix it soon.

    Another site says this, however:

Just like a lot of AVG users around the world, I got the above error message when I booted up my PC. After searching and reading a bit of forums and blogs, I saw this helpful post by Sean Kearney. I’m reposting it here and adding a few helpful images so that other users encountering the same problem can have a bit of peace of mind.

I used his solution and it worked like a charm.

    Thanks Sean Kearney!!!

After poking around on the web for a while it has become apparent that this is a widespread and to many users a scary problem. I did find the fix and it works like a charm. To get AVG 8.0 working properly again you must do the following:

        1) Go to the AVG website at the following URL: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-updat...

        2) Create a folder on your desktop and download the following files to the folder:

        a) AVI: 270.6.4

        b) IAVI: / 1616

        3) Open the AVG control panel and click the “Tools” link. Select “Update from Directory,” navigate to the desktop file that you created and placed the downloaded files into and select the file as the update source.

AVG should automatically load the update files and all of your notifications should go back to green. Hope this helps.

    I hope this helps!
