How to upgrade to wireless internet?

I am currently using the Tiscali DSL broadband service, for which i pay £15 a month, and which I have to say has been very reliable. However, I have just bought a new laptop and want to use the internet on it. Therefore I think I need to buy a router, but am clueless as to what else i should do.

Is there any need to contact tiscali? How would I connect the router? Would it cost more? Is it easy to set up?

Thanky-you very much

  1. All you need to set up a wireless network in your home is a wireless router and the ethernet cable that comes with  the router. (Oh...and you need a modem to which you connect using ethernet cable. But I assume you already have this)

The price of wireless routers range from £20 or so to a lot. If you just want to get internet basic use the cheaper ones should be enough. I am using one that cost me £35 (including postage) and it is working fine. It would be wise to buy the router from a reputable and accessible store because you can call them up and ask for help in case any problems arises. Because if a problem with wireless routers arises... its not that east to solve from my experience. Some of the stores you can try are PC world, Currys etc. And make sure that you are buying a DSL router and not ADSL.

Set up instructions are usually provided with the router and you dont NEED to contact your ISP (internet service provider: a term you are going to come in contact with a lot) it Tiscali.

If everything goes all right you wouldnt have much problem setting up. You connect the router to yur modem and the router to the PC as well. All via ethernet cable. Hope this has been helpful. Good luck.

  2. I don't know how things are in the UK, but here in the USA, I would first contact Tiscali, first.  They might have a very affordable router solution for you. If not I would go to your local electronics superstore or even online to locate a router. At Radio Shack here in the USA they run about $25-$50.  I work for a telecom company and they have a router that they can provide to their customers, but it's extremely expensive.  At Radio Shack, the router is about $25-$50.  I once new someone who was a complete idiot that installed one themselves.  I'm sure you can do it too!
