  1. Scanning is how the picture is drawn on your screen. There are two ways. Standard TV draws every other line, first the odd numbered lines and then the even numbered lines. This is called interlaced scanning and refereed to as 480i. 480 lines of resolution interlaced. This can make the picture look kind of jerky.

A better way is to draw every line from top to bottom, refereed to as progressive scan or 480p.

If you have a high definition TV you have two other choices in resolution, 720 or 1080. In modern TVs 720 is always progressive (720p). In older TVs (or cheaper ones) they gave the option of 1080i. Higher resolution but interlaced scanning. Why they did this I don't know since it does not make much sense. Almost all newer TVs now support 1080p and high end TVs will do that at 60 times a second or even 120 times a second compared to the 30 frames a second of the broadcast signal.

If you have a hi-def TV I'd suggest you experiment with it and find out which resolution looks the best with the sources you have. If you don't have a hi-def TV you have nothing to worry about. SD (standard definition) TV only supports 480i.

  2. That isn't true...your video will always be limited to the NATIVE RECORDED Resolution.....

If it was recorded in 720P all you will get out of it is 720P, no more, no less.....
