How to us Phillips DVD recorder to record video games for youtube?

when ever i go on youtube and look at my cousins vid's all of them are in great picture. but when i try it's like s&*t. i called him and he said he use's a dvd recorder and i bout one but i dont know how to set it up and i tryed alot but it wont work can you help me and tell me perfect steps on how to set it up perfect and tell me how to put it on youtube later oncause i dont get what i have to do
