  1. Your meter is called a multimeter or volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM). If you search the internet, you can find all kinds of illustrated generic instructions for using it. They are all similar. I seached for the three words: check battery multimeter. These are some of the first items of 50 thousand results.

Study carefully before using the meter and start with small batteries.

    Safety rules:

Don't check anything unless you know the voltage is within the limits of the meter and you are experienced with that voltage level.

When checking volts, set the meter for a voltage level above the highest voltage that you expect to measure.

Use only AC settings for alternating current (wall outlets etc).

Use only DC settings for direct current (batteries).

Use Ohms settings only for things that are not connected to a poser source.

Current settings must be used only with a series connection. Don't use it if you don't understand it. Connecting across a power source with the meter set to current (amps or milliamps) creates a short circuit and will fry the meter in an instant or blow the small fuse that is probably inside the meter.

  2. read the manual, you have it, I don't!
