How to use a handbrake when on a hill?

i tried to use my handbrake... and when i took off my right foot on the brake while my left foot is on the clutch my car keeps rolling backwards. how do you use the handbrake when on a hill then... please help.

  1. I don't think your handbrake works properly.  It may need to be adjusted.

    You need to learn to heel and toe if you're going to drive a stick.


  2. Engage hand brake. Let off foot brake. Take off normally. As you feel the car begin to want to move, slowly let off the handbrake and you will take off nice and smooth.

  3. The brake cable could be stretched, out of adjustment or broke. The brake shoes or pads (depending if the vehicle has rear drums or disk)my be badly worn. or you may not pulling the leaver far enough. give it a hard tug
