How to use javascripts in a webpage?

This may be a really dumb question, but I have seen some really cool effects on various sites that are done using free javascripts. I have tried and tried downloading some of these free scripts to use in my websites, but no matter what I try none of them has ever worked. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong? Or does anyone know of some good tutorials about using free javascripts in html web pages? Thanks for any suggestions!

before you starts your body tag u need to insert below line

(insert into head tag)

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">

and now you can use any java script in your page,
