How to use lighting at my reception

Question

I found another yahoo answers post that said that I could use par can lights with gels to up-light a wedding reception, but I'm wondering if that will make the uplight look like seen here: http://www.djcraig.net/uplighting.html

Also, how would I accomplish pin spot lighting like this:

With the same lights? I'm completely not a lighting person and have no experience, but I have the perfect site that craves lighting, and I can't afford to hire a company to do it. And it seems kinda simple once I figure out what I need. Let me know if this is over my head.

Use candles inside candle holders sparingly. You can even use scented candles that are warm coloured. Put them in a decorated frosted glass or patterned glass. You can get such things from Ebay or Ikea or your local stores.

yes you can get the up lighting easy also you can rent them.

as fir pin spotting that is more invasive you will need overhead structures

I can't get the link for the pin lighting to work, but it would be achieved with a different type of cover over the lens.  

I really hope you can make it work for you, the lighting adds such a great atmosphere to a potentially boring room!
