  1. I would be glad to help to understand buses but you forgot

one tiny thing you didnt meantion what cities (or cities you

    wanted to get to/from

    that would help a lot

for all I know you could want from Los Angeles

to San Bernadino or New York to Washington DC

or from Los Angeles to pomona

or from new York state to to New jersy

  2. It would help if you told us where you were.

Most cities and counties that have bus system have a website where you can put in your starting and ending points and get the routes.

  3. try an alternative means of travel. and If you do sit toward the front. if you can.

  4. Intra-city ... Go up to the bus authority and look at the map and routes. Some cities even have a phone number you can call to get route info like that. Sometimes there are local agents there to assist you.

Between cities (or bus lines)... you need to take a commercial bus line like greyhound. Greyhound runs close to most cities, even if they don't directly say it. For instance a bus traveling down a major highway most likely makes stops along the highway on major cities, but only lists the end points. To solve that problem call the bus line and get a ticket, the ticket agent can create a route for you.

It is quite possible that no routes exist, however, as many points are spaced several hours apart. How do you reach those? Drive or hire a car service.

There are other options too. For instance if you're by a university many students may be willing to carpool for the trip if you can share some of the gas expenses. Also many "van lines" exist around airports that can take a person to and from major air terminals. I've seen some that even go as far as a few hours away, they make regular stops like a bus does and all you do is buy a ticket and catch the van at the right time.

Also take a look into services like amtrack. If it's a very popular route you may find there's a train that runs between the 2.

  5. Can you just rent a car? If not, use a taxi or shuttle service, may cost a bit though. Call up your local bus company and see if they know what services are available in the surrounding area that's outside their routes.
