How to use wifi friend codes?

ok i have a pay pal on pokemone pearl and i tried to get a friend code but it says i have no signal so how can i do it do i need to plug it in to my computer and use the net?

this is so frustraiting.

you need a wireless router so you can connect with WiFi.
