How to verify a job candidate credential?

The job candidate claims to a graduate from university in France. I emailed the university to check it out but get no reply.

He should be able to show a diploma, no? Otherwise tell him you need a certified transcript form the school.

Crusader is correct.  Also, I would never suggest emailing a school,  b/c the reply speed is always slow and unpredictable.  I would call if I were you.  The easiest way is to require the candidate to provide a transcript or copy of the diploma.  If he can't well I'm not sure I'd want to hire someone who couldn't even come up with their own diploma.

EDIT: I wouldn't want to hire someone who left their diploma in another country either, haha
