If you don't have it / lost it, you can request a duplicate from a regional office of the social security administration.   You can find your local office here:  http://www.ssa.gov/reach.htm

If you are verifying it for employement purposes, they will give you a receipt showing that you have applied for a duplicate - which will take a while to receive.  The employer will accept the receipt as proof of employement eligibility for up to 90 days before you must produce the actual SS card.
