  1. i use a soaker hose connected to timer that comes on 2 times a day for 10 minutes to water my garden, this keeps me from watering the whole plant only the roots,i use hay under my plants for mulch it keeps out weeds and the soil from getting dried out and keeps it cool, hope this helps you.

  2. If it don't rain once a week you really need to water your plants.

Plants like hosta's, ferns, vegetables and small plants need to be watered more. Once you get the hang of it it will be a breeze. You'll know just what they need. When I water if using the hose I count to 25 slowly, then move on to the next plant. If I use a watering can or bucked a couple of buckets per plant, for the larger ones and one bucket for the smaller plants.. Water the base of the plant not from the top. Of course if they wilt and are dry water them.

You can fertilize once a month, I prefer the regular Miracle-gro

Mulch is used to keep plant moisture in the ground, and to help keep the roots cool. And we use it because it makes thing nice, neat and pretty. And if you put it on thick it will keep the weed down.

The best thing is to remove all the weeds/grass around the plant where you want to mulch. Water thoroughly before you mulch it will help keep the moister in.

Some people put down lancaping cloth before mulching. Some use newspaper; if you use newspaper use strips  wet it and crisscross it first. use the black and white print

    and some just the mulch.

If you are talking vegetable only my daughter uses mulch down the middle of the rows of vegetables.

I hope this is not to confusing, good luck.

  3. well i would suggest not using mulch unless you have to, most people use it for decoration, if you live in a hot area and dont like to water every day you can, but mulch also draws bugs in hot summer, so its not always the way to go, if you stick your finger in the ground and its dry 2 inches down they its time to water, i live in a hot area so i water every morning, but i would save my mulch for winter protection , and that way not so many bugs , good luck oh and mulch goes around the base of the plant.

  4. When it is hot, the garden needs about an inch of water, twice a week.  It is better to water it well and not so often.  Don't just water lightly every day. Water early in the day and try to keep the water on the ground and off the leaves.

Mulch will help keep the water from evaporating too fast and will prevent weeds.  You can use layers of newspaper or straw or landscape fabric or black plastic or bark mulch.  You can even use old carpet.   If you use fresh wood mulch, it will steal nitrogen from the soil as it decays, so add some slow release fertilizer.  You can put the mulch under the plants and  between the rows.  If you use something like plastic, then you want to make sure your hose goes under it when you water, or leave spaces for the water to get to the soil.

  5. Put the mulch (about 1" to 1.5") all around your plants, but don't put it right up to the base of the plant.  Keep it an inch or two away.  I put the mulch wherever there is dirt in my garden.  It retains the moisture and you don't deal with weeds as much.  As for watering, you will not have to do it as often with the mulch, but you should try to water deeply at least once a week.  If it is  drought conditions, then you should up it to 2-3 times a week.  You will see the flowers wilting and this is a sign they are stressing from lack of water.

  6. How much and how often to water plants always puzzles the beginner, and there is no definite rule to follow. No one amount of water can be said to be right for pot plants, bench plants, or seedlings. Types of potting and benching soils; the amount of sunshine, humidity, and air circulation; the season of the year; and the location of the greenhouse are all factors in developing a watering program conducive to steady, healthy growth and bloom. http://www.lovelygreenhouses.com/water.p...
