    The important wires for normal 10/100 eithernet are pins 1, 2, 3, & 6 so you can hook up only those (usually the orange-white, orange, green-white, and green wires) you can use the other wires for a second jack or telephones.  Just untwist as little as possible when seperating the wires.

    Gigabyte eithernet requires all 8 wires be used.

    Cat5 wire is cheapest and most common/best for most home users, Cat5e is shielded for less interference/more speed, and Cat6 is even more shielded for very high speed and low interference.
