I am 15 and in only a few months I am going to be finished with high school and then I go to university. I am very interested in working for an embassy abroad. What classes do I need to take, what degrees should I have? I am an Estonian-American and so would I work for the Estonian Embassy? Could I work for the Russian Embassy because I speak Russian?

  1. You should be an international studies major. Or international politics. Every summer the consulate offers internships abroad in many embassies. I believe it is the homeland security website you can find the info on.

  2. Language abilities are very important, but assignments are not necessarily based on national origin, and over the course of a 20 plus year career, you would work in a variety of locations and assignments.

See the following site for complete information.  Doing well in university  is going to be a big step in the proper direction.  Consider adding a student internship to your curriculum.

  3. Many Embassies and Consulates provide opportunities for summer employment or semester internships.  Usually unpaid and for 3-6 months at a time.  They both provide an opportunity to learn what goes on between countries on a bilateral and multilateral level.  It will also help you make a better informed decision if the diplomatic life is best for you and what you expect to get out of such a career.  Take classes you enjoy as there are diplomats that specialize in many fields, i.e. politics, economics, cultures, public affairs, science, trade, etc.  Good luck and keep working towards a broad course of study.
