How to write 12 thousand on a check?

I write "Twelve Thousand Dollars ----------------" dollars,  but I've also seen it written "Twelve Thousand and no/100 ------------------------" dollars.

"twelve thousand"

I couldn't tell exactly what you meant.  You should spell out as much of the amount as possible, filling out as much of the "pay" line as possible; if necessary, add some squiggle at the end to take up space.  If the check is for exactly $12K, you may write "exactly twelve thousand" or "twelve thousand and zero hundredths" or "twelve thousand 00/100" or almost anything that is unambiguous (subject to interpretation.)
